You can set up scenarios (services to operate) as well as using those of the game and those that are left by others on the Steam Community, and there are 'free roam' and 'quick drive' options. They have quite a few sales too so you can often pick it up quite cheaply. I downloaded it from Steam and they keep most of the files updated and offer downloadable content (DLC) for it. I've got Railworks: Train Simulator and it's pretty good. Fascinating, but the cost of the gear to do it is way out of my league. The only thing that has caught my interest since, was watching a guy at an exhibition remodelling a lline of double track into a tramway running down the centre of a road with Google Earth images providing the environment.

Whilst waiting for responses to emails I started reading the handbook and decided there was very little similarity between the game's controls and those of a locomotive, steam, diesel or electric. After some heated email exchanges Amazon accepted that I couldn't read the list of incompatible cards without removing the CD from the sealed box. Of course it didn't, and only when I searched the recesses of the CD could I find a file containing the known incompatibilities with video cards and mine was on the list. The closest I ever got to running one was an early version of the MS one which I carefully checked the system requirements on the website and on the outside of the box to male sure it would run on my gear. I haven't followed it very closely recently, the bve scene seems to have dried up but when you realize that some of the writers seem to be young persons of school age the work is remarkable. There are others as well, I believe one was Zumo, or similar, which had an HST on a Padd - Oxford run, but apparently it wasn't very reliable when it was introduced. There are others out there, this sight may be able to help you as well It was very popular, I had queues all day long. Network West Midlands features here I used one of the routes as a 'drive a train' exhibit at our club show for three years using a 42 inch tv screen, and a gaming handset as a controller.

The upgrades have promised for a long time now (years in fact). This website produced high quality simulations of actual routes although I haven't tried one recently. I followed it for some years, but it seems to have imploded on itself over the last eighteen months or so and nothing new seems to have been produced.
